The ornate gold detailing seemed to glow against the darkening sky\, with intricate carvings\, guardian lions\, colorful shrines tucked beneath enormous oak trees\, and enough architectural detail that every time someone thought they were done taking photos\, another angle presented itself. One of those places that quietly reminds you Jacksonville has corners most people never realize exist.\n\nFrom there we drifted back toward Riverside\, taking advantage of shaded brick paths\, quiet neighborhood streets\, and the occasional opportunity to stop and appreciate that somebody actually thought to plant trees before paving everything. The river corridor was calm\, traffic was light\, and the evening sun managed to produce just enough dramatic clouds to make everyone briefly believe they were far more athletic than they actually were.\n\nNaturally\, no ride doctrine was violated. We concluded at Whit’s for frozen custard\, where serious discussions were held concerning flavors\, bicycles\, and other matters of no lasting historical importance. We hit the new River Plaza park\, the Performing Arts garden\, the Corkscrew\, crossed the SUP\, and continued into San Marco.\n\nAlong the way we hooked up with BikeAid for some photos and to help with the co-op’s media outreach. A few of the BikeAid food outreach crew joined us for a mile or two before we continued through San Marco\, made the required inspection of Alexander Oaks Park\, and eventually worked our way into St. Nicholas.\n\nThe rain had already done its work and moved along\, leaving us with surprisingly cool weather\, mostly dry pavement\, and considerably less atmospheric hostility than Florida usually provides in August.\n\nPrincess Lucy had a great time and maintained an appropriately commanding presence throughout the ride. Everyone seemed quite pleased to have her along\, and she supplied enough enthusiasm for the rest of us without appearing to regret any of it.\n\nExcellent evening\, excellent company\, and a full ride completed with the Princess aboard. We continue to demonstrate that putting a small child in charge may actually improve club operations.
